“Dear Lord, of all the changes I know I need to make in my life, the biggest is to have more you in my heart and less me-me-me. I’m surrounded by idols, intrigued and entranced by things to chase and have and worship. But they are trash compared to the thrill of having you.

Without your help I would become my own idol. I would seek my own pleasures, pursue my own comfort, soothe my own insecurities, and try every way I could to make myself bigger. My friend Paul has a better way:

“I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.” (Phillippians 3: 7-9).

I owe you the design and creation of my life. You gave me parents and shelter, food and friends, an education and a purpose. I live in your world, not vice versa. I owe you my lifelong thanks for the bloody rescue from Satan and hell. I have peace of mind, cleansing from sinful guilt, and the help of your Spirit who lives in me. I have been washed and fed, taught by the Word, and protected by the heavenly host. Lord, you are my all in all.”
